So serving sizes # of carbs X serving size minus the fiber count = #carbs per portion.
Insulin was a multiplications factor too. I remember because my son was still in the “Honeymoon phase” where his pancreas was still producing insulin on it’s own it was hard to tell how much long term or short term insulin to give him and he was a growing boy. All of this needs to be taken into account.
His honeymoon phase lasted unusually over 1 year (usually it is only about 3 months or so) I was constantly on the phone with his nurse during the first three months to administer his long term insulin. – I needed the help and support with those calculations. I was invited to call her at her home every morning with his morning blood sugar numbers to get this all under control and in our target ranges.
Never mind going eventually on an insulin pump when the needles got to be too much for him. It is all a delicate balance in keeping your child alive and well It is a very adult disease for a child too!
