So there is a BIG difference between type 1 diabetes and type 2. Type 1 you can eat pretty much what you want but you have to count cars every time you open your mouth. The carbs are calculated by the amount of sugars minus the amount of fiber – and consider the serving size. As the carbs are calculated then translated into the amount of fast acting insulin you give yourself. (Whether in a needle form or a pump)
Most food labels gives you the serving size and carb count minus the fiber and you have your total cars. We had lengthy lessons at the hospital about it. Most of the lesson passed that was on non labelled foods like fruits and vegetables. I remembered buying snack bags and breaking down snacks out into serving sizes and labeling them for his lunch. Most were in multiples of 20 to ake it eay on him.
I came back for my next session and said, “Guess What??”
Our nurses guess was right. Apparently, ‘very typically‘ a mom new to diabetes will go home and go through the entire cupboard and fridge of food doing a manual carb count on everything edible. I labelled EVERYTHING! All with numbers – it made it easy to see at a glance to help us all through this time…and it made packing lunches in the morning much easier.
Ok – so I am typical!
